Olympians Urge on Iran to Halt Death Sentence of Boxing Champion

Over two dozen Olympic medal winners, coaches and other world-class competitors have put their names to a statement demanding a stop to the execution of a champion boxer and coach, who is on death row in the nation.

Escalating Global Anger

Amidst rising international outrage over the country's escalating use of capital punishment as a tool of suppression, the strongly worded letter condemns the authorities's verdict to uphold the death sentence of the athlete.

The athlete, three decades old, from Mashhad in north-east Iran, was arrested for participating in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and charged of aiding an opposition group. He has endured half a decade in detention, where he has been tortured and confined in isolation.

“Competition is designed to encourage faith, solidarity, and bravery,” the endorsers expressed. “The capital punishment of a titleholder for his political views is a blatant attack on these ideals and a caution to all sportspeople who dares to express dissent.

Pattern of Killing Athletes

The appeal said that the athlete's case was part of a pattern and underscored the country's history of putting to death sports champions for their beliefs, such as Habib Khabiri, skipper of the soccer squad, and Fourouzan Abdi, leader of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, an athlete, a young national sports titleholder, was put to death.

Additional endorsers to the statement include a sailing champion, who skippered the first women's squad in a global yacht race and was the first woman to be awarded a renowned nautical honor; the former leader of the national squad an athlete; and Bahram Mavaddat, who was in the national team for the global tournament.

Arrest and Flawed Legal Process

The boxer was arrested in March 2020. The allegations against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and ruin of government belongings”. His sentence has been reversed multiple times but on 4 October it was maintained on the third attempt. His trial was condemned as “grossly unfair” by human rights activists and bodies.

Urging to International Body

The appeal to stop the boxer's capital punishment follows a previous appeal to the UN high commissioner for human rights, endorsed by in excess of a hundred advocates and organizations, urging intervention to stop the competitor's death.

Execution Crisis

Based on data, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has attained shocking proportions”. In two thousand twenty-three, the government sentenced at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a nearly half increase on the previous year. In the prior period, statistics showed 972 executions, representing the peak figure since two thousand fifteen. Over 800 people have been executed so far in 2025.

Dissidents and protesters are targets, particularly in the aftermath of the the year 2022 protests. Specialists say the Iranian authorities have employed the executions to quell dissent, instil apprehension among the public and tighten their grip on power.
